Why attend the auction?

Hawthorne has made an amazing turnaround in recent years, thanks to the hard work and dedication of teachers, staff, families and community members who are committed to supporting high-quality education for all children at a thriving neighborhood school. Now, as our community continues to grow, the school’s needs continue to expand, as well. By supporting the FOH’s 9thAnnual Fundraising Auction you’ll help:

Expand Students’ Educational Opportunities

FOH supports educational opportunities to help minimize gaps in state and local education funding, with a majority of our funding going to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) programs and activities. In the past, the auction has raised funds to launch an artist-in-residence program, replace outdated computers, and overhaul the school’s stage, so students have a performance space where they can proudly perform.

Enrich Students’ Academic Experience

FOH is focused on building an inclusive community and celebrating our diversity. Funds from the auction support field trips that expand students’ horizons, and facilitate activities that emphasize our sense of community such field day, literacy night, and 5thGrade Graduation.

Provide Family Support Resources

Hawthorne serves a very diverse community, both racially and economically, and also welcomes many immigrant families. Our student population includes 62% living in low-income households and 10% homeless. FOH provides critical funding to support these students to help ensure that ALL students have the opportunity to participate and be successful.

Make Our Community Stronger

The auction is a great opportunity to meet other Hawthorne parents and caregivers, while also supporting your local public school, and small businesses. Plus, it’s a super fun night, filled with great food, drinks and auction items you will love.

What does the auction fund?

The auction is our biggest fundraiser every year, accounting for approximately 70% of the FOH annual budget. The money raised goes directly back to Hawthorne through funding for STEAM activities and programs; classroom and family support; and PTA sponsored events.

FOH budget breakdown:

  • 50% STEAM - science, technology, engineering, art, math project-based learning, and more
  • 20% CLASSROOM- supplies, Scholastic subscriptions, field trips, and more
  • 10% FAMILY SUPPORT - ESL classes, summer books, crisis support, interpretation, and more
  • 20% PTA SPONSORED EVENTS - Field Day, Literacy Night, 5th Grade Graduation, Auction, Walk-a-thon, and more

What should I expect at the auction?

Come ready to chat with faculty, Hawthorne parents and neighbors, eat delicious food, bid on an item or two, and raise funds for Hawthorne.

The auction is a fun and festive evening of community-building and fundraising for Hawthorne Elementary. There will be delicious food, including a vegetarian option, provided by Jack’s BBQ (voted #1 BBQ in Seattle by Seattle Weekly), a chance to purchase delicious wine and craft beer from the no-host bar, a dessert dash and super fun games you can even bid on, like corn hole and a giant-sized Jenga set. The beginning of the evening features a silent auction, with lots of cool items including artwork, tickets to events, collector memorabilia and more. You’ll also hear from Hawthorne staff and parents speak about FOH-funded activities and events, and learn about some current needs at Hawthorne.

The highlight of the event will be a quick-paced entertaining live auction, hosted by a master auctioneer. Previous live auction items have included local, out of state and Mexican vacation getaways, dining-and-wine packages; Marymoor Park concert passes, classroom movie night with the kindergarten teachers, a roller skating party with Mr. Green; and more.

What is the 2019 Hawthorne auction theme?

This year’s theme is Hawthorne Pride, inspired by the school’s spring musical production of Disney's The Lion King. We take pride in our students, teachers and staff, and the theme reflects our love and support for Hawthorne Elementary.

What should I wear?

While most will be dressed in cocktail attire, there is no formal dress code, so come in whatever you’re comfortable wearing for a festive night out. The most important thing is that you have a good time and your clothes don’t prevent you from raising your paddle for Hawthorne.

How do I donate something to the auction?

Auction Item: Email Auction Chair Josie Clark at auction@friendsofhawthorne.org if you have an item you’d like to donate, or to connect the procurement team to potential auction items.

Dessert Dash: Last year, we featured an auction dessert table and its success inspires us to do the same this year. We would like to request a cake/dessert donation from you. It could be homemade or from any of your favorite bakeries or restaurants. If interested, kindly email Tanya Rolluda at tanyamaria0725@gmail.com.

How do I volunteer to help with the auction?

It takes a village to host our biggest fundraiser of the school year. There are lots of ways you can help:

  • Procure auction items (click here for the online Donation Form, or download a printable form here)
  • Write, edit or design our flyers and invitations
  • Manage our database of auction items
  • Help make event decorations
  • Volunteer during the event by staffing work to bar, doing data entry or taking photos of the event
  • Many hands make light work, folks. Any and all volunteers are welcome. Let us know how and when you can help, and we'll find a job that's right for you!

Email Auction Chair Josie Clark at auction@friendsofhawthorne.org to join our team of volunteers.
